 Medicare Enrollment

Initial Enrollment Period

You can first sign up for Part A and/or Part B during the 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65. If you sign up for Part A and/or Part B during the first 3 months of your Initial Enrollment Period, in most cases, your coverage starts the first day of your birthday month. However, if your birthday is on the first day of the month, your coverage will start the first day of the prior month.

If you have medical insurance coverage under a group health plan based on your or your spouse's current employment, you may not need to apply for Medicare Part B at age 65. Remember, Part B has a monthly premium of $174.50 in 2024.  You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period that will let you sign up for Part B.

Special Enrollment Period

After your Initial Enrollment Period is over, you may have a chance to sign up for Medicare during a Special Enrollment Period. If you didn’t sign up for Part A and/or Part B when you were first eligible because you’re covered under a group health plan (with 20 or more employees) based on current employment (your own, a spouse’s, you can sign up for Part A and/or Part B during:

Anytime you’re still covered by the group health plan

During the 8-month period that begins the month after the employment ends or the coverage ends.

(It doesn’t apply if you’re still in your Initial Enrollment Period.)

If moved to a new address in a different service area you may be eligible for a special enrollment and If newly eligible for Medicare because I have a disability (under 65) you are eligible for a special enrollment.

Open Enrollment Period

If you didn’t sign up for Part A and/or Part B during your Initial Enrollment Period, and you don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you can sign up between January 1–March 31 each year. Your coverage won’t start until July 1 of that year, and you may have to pay a higher Part A and/or Part B premium for late enrollment.

Annual Enrollment Period

Every year, Medicare’s open enrollment period is October 15 - December 7.  Medicare health and drug plans can make changes each year—things like cost, coverage, and what providers and pharmacies are in their networks. October 15 to December 7 is when all people with Medicare can change their Medicare health plans and prescription drug coverage, any changes will be effective January 1st of the following year.
